Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has life on it. It is third nearest planet to the sun in our solar system. This solar system is in the Milky Way galaxy.

SIZE: The diameter of Earth is12 756 km, which makes it the fifth largest planet .Its circumference is 40 075km around the equator but 40 008 around the poles. moonearth.gif

STRUCTURE: The Earth is made up of  three (3) layers called the core, the mantle and the crust. The core is made up of molten metals of iron and nickel.  It is 2 900km below the surface. The mantle is about 2900km thick. The crust is the hard outer layer and lies above the mantle. About 70% of the Earth is covered in water.

ATMOSPHERE: Earth’s atmosphere is 800km thick and is made up of different gases. It protects the Earth from meteorites and the harmful rays of the sun. It is mostly nitrogen and oxygen. This is where Earth’s weather happens.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE: The temperature on Earth ranges from -88C to 58C. It is coldest at the poles and warmest around the equator. Climates are different and occur because of different temperature and rainfall.

On August 4th 2007 NASA launched project Phoenix into space using delta II rockets. The launch took place from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The aim of the mission is to see if Mars can support life. After the probe lands on the north pole of Mars, a robotic arm will dig about 1 metre into the ice and rock. It will scoop it up and analyse it in its laboratory to see if any organisms live there. The probe will use stereo cameras to send pictures back to Earth.

The Phoenix is expected to reach Mars on 25th May 2008.
